Thakkali Pulisseri / Tomato Pulisseri

Ingredients (Serves 6)

1. Tomato – 3 medium, cubed

Green chilies – 2, slit

Curry leaves – A few

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Chilly powder – 1/2 tsp

Salt – To taste

Water – 1 cup or as required

2. Grated coconut – 3/4 cup

Cumin seeds – 1/8 tsp

3. Yoghurt, beaten – 2 cups

4. Salt – To taste

5. Coconut oil

Mustard seeds

Dried red chilies

Shallots – 2, thinly sliced (Optional)

Method

1. Grind grated coconut with cumin seeds adding little water to a fine paste.

2. Cook all the ingredients numbered 1 for about 8 – 10 minutes. Add ground coconut paste and cook over low heat for a few minutes.

Add beaten yoghurt and stir continuously for 1 – 2 minutes until heated through. Add a pinch of sugar / jaggery to balance the flavors. Switch off.

3. Heat coconut oil in a small pan. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dried red chilies and curry leaves for a few seconds. Fry shallots until golden.

Pour this over the prepared pulisseri. Keep covered for 10 minutes. Serve with rice and other side-dishes.
