The Tamil New Year, is celebrated across South India on the first day of Tamil month Chithirai. Also known as Puthuvarusham, the day falls on April 14 this year. On this occasion, people clean their house, prepare a tray full of fruits, flowers and auspicious items and decorate the house. People dress up in ethnic outfits, visit local temples and offer prayers to welcome the New Year.

They wish each other ‘Puthandu vazthukal’ (Happy New Year), and the festival is celebrated on massive scale in Madurai’s Meenakshi temple, Tiruchirapalli, Kanchipuram and other places. Puthandu is also celebrated in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius and other countries that have Tamil diaspora.
